++STARTS ON PREVIOUS SHOT; PARTLY OVERLAID WITH SHOTS 5 TO 9++
"I think a robust response should be expected. India under the current Modi government, has adopted a more tough on security posture. We’ve also seen limited signs of external pressure on India to restrain its action. So unlike previous periods of India-Pakistan hostility, when the U.S. played a prominent role in de-escalating tensions, we’re not seeing any signs of that under the current U.S. administration. So as a result of that, I think that we could see the situation go from from bad to worse. Despite the the bad blood that exists in the bilateral relationship, part of this can be attributed to the fact that they’re both nuclear armed, weapons armed states. So as a result of that, there’s always a risk of escalation, or a conflict escalating into a nuclear conflict so that I think has created a degree of restraint on both sides. We’ve seen, for instance, as I mentioned this, the ceasefire along the Line of Control demarcating Indian and Pakistan administered Kashmir that’s largely held in place since 2021. And despite, you know, more assertive posturing, New Delhi has tried to minimize its collateral damage through retaliatory attacks. So far in in contrast to, say, the conflicts in Gaza or in Ukraine where we’ve seen significant civilian casualties. India is generally try to maintain a calibrated response."

STORYLINE:
Indian and Pakistani soldiers briefly exchanged fire along their highly militarized frontier in the disputed Himalayan region of Kashmir, Indian officials said Friday, as tensions soared between the nuclear-armed rivals following a deadly attack on tourists.
The tensions will most likely continue to escalate, said Chietigj Bajpaee a senior research fellow for South Asia in the Asia-Pacific Programme at Chatham House.
"I think that we could see the situation go from from bad to worse," he said.
India has described the massacre in which gunmen killed 26 people, most of them Indian, as a “terror attack” and accused Pakistan of backing it.
