3. SOUNDBITE (Mandarin) Zhao Chenxin, Vice Chairman of the National Development and Reform Commission:
“They make up bargaining chips out of thin air, bully and go back on their words, which makes everyone see one thing more and more clearly, that is the so-called ‘reciprocal tariffs’ severely go against historical trends and economic laws, impact international trade rules and orders, and seriously impair the legitimate rights and interests of countries. It’s a typical unilateral bullying practice that harms oneself and others, is unpopular and is bound to end in failure. ”

5. SOUNDBITE (Mandarin) Yu Jiadong, Vice Minister of Human Resources and Social Security:
“We have made a comprehensive analysis and prediction of this year’s employment situation together with relevant departments. We are ready to deal with various uncertainties. We have a sufficient employment policy toolbox, and have made policy reserves in terms of encouraging enterprises to absorb employment, supporting enterprises to stabilize and expand employment, and promoting workers to improve their skills to find jobs or start their own businesses. The policies and measures will be introduced in a timely manner according to changes in the situation.”

7. SOUNDBITE (Mandarin) Zou Lan, Deputy Governor of the People’s Bank of China:
“We have noticed that there have been some fluctuations in the U.S. bond market recently. I would like to stress that for a long time, China’s foreign exchange reserves have been invested in the international financial market in accordance with market-oriented and professional principles with the goal of safety, liquidity and value preservation and appreciation, and have achieved a relatively effective diversification of the investment portfolio. The impact of changes in a single market or a single asset on China’s foreign exchange reserves is generally limited.”

9. SOUNDBITE (Mandarin) Zhao Chenxin, Vice Chairman of the National Development and Reform Commission:
“In 2024, the import of sorghum, corn, soybeans and other grains from the United States accounted for a very low proportion of China’s domestic grain consumption, and they are basically feed grains. These products are highly substitutable and are in sufficient supply in the international market. At the same time, domestic grain reserve resources are also sufficient. Even if we do not purchase feed grains and oil from the United States, it will not have any impact on China’s grain supply.”

STORYLINE:
China’s leaders are downplaying the potential impact from U.S. President Donald Trump’s trade war, saying they have the capacity to protect jobs and limit damage from higher tariffs on Chinese exports.
Several senior officials of different government ministries spoke at a briefing in Beijing on Monday aimed at shoring up confidence.
They had promises of support for companies and the unemployed, easier lending conditions and other policies to counter the impact of combined tariffs of up to 145% on U.S. imports from China.
It followed a meeting of China’s powerful Politburo last week that analysts said had focused on ways to keep growth on track despite slowing exports.
Zhao Chenxin, deputy director of the National Development and Reform Commission, on Monday reiterated China’s rejection of what leaders there call bullying.
