STORYLINE:
BRICS foreign ministers gathered in Rio de Janeiro on Tuesday for the second and final day of meetings, bringing together representatives from all 11 current member states.
For the first time, the expanded BRICS, comprising both the original members and new partner countries admitted in 2024, met formally as a unified group.
The bloc now includes Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, Iran, Ethiopia, and Argentina.
With its recent expansion, BRICS aims to amplify the voice of the Global South and reinforce multilateral cooperation in addressing key international challenges.
Following the meeting, Brazil’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Mauro Vieira held a news conference, where he presented a statement from Brazil’s BRICS presidency summarizing the discussions.
In his remarks, Vieira highlighted the group’s shared commitment to a more cooperative and balanced global order.
“It is not in the interest of Brazil or our BRICS partners to live in a fractured world,” he said. “We need to strengthen multilateralism and cooperation as tools to address contemporary challenges. This is the spirit behind the motto Brazil adopted for its BRICS presidency: ‘Strengthen Global South cooperation for more inclusive and sustainable governance.”
Vieira also noted that the ministers discussed the role of BRICS in promoting peace, resolving conflicts through dialogue, and addressing global crises.
He emphasized the need to reform the United Nations Security Council, with increased participation from Africa, Asia, and Latin American nations.
This ministerial meeting is part of the lead-up to the 16th BRICS Summit, which will bring together the heads of state in Rio de Janeiro in July.
