The industrial workers and members of the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions gathered in South Korea near Sungnyemun and Seoul Station before joining the main May Day rally.
The holiday, also known as International Workers’ Day or Labor Day, marks the struggles and achievements of workers and the labor movement around the world. Thousands of people are expected to attend rallies and demonstrations calling for stronger protections for workers, higher wages, greater equality and more.
Yang Kyung-soo, Chiarman of Korea Confederation of Trade Unions, stated, "Let the cries of citizens calling for Yoon Suk-yeol’s impeachment, which echoed across the square, be realized through the actions of the KCTU,” adding, “Let’s protect low-wage workers by raising the minimum wage and win the right to organize through revisions to the labor union law.”
Other unions that attended the rally in Seoul included the Construction Workers’ Union and the Public Transport Workers’ Union.
Around 3 p.m., about 30,000 people gathered for the main rally according to the organizers’ estimate. The police gave an unofficial estimate of 17,000.
