STORYLINE:
Children were getting vaccinated against measles Wednesday in northern Mexico, where an outbreak that originated in Texas has led to hundreds of infections.

The outbreak was first in the Mexican border state of Chihuahua in mid-February, with the first case being documented in an eight-year-old boy from a Mennonite community – which has a long-established presence in the region – in the city of Cuauhtemoc.

The unvaccinated boy and his family had traveled to visit relatives in Seminole, Texas, the epicenter of measles outbreaks in the US and brought back the infection to Mexico, according to Chihuahua officials.

Since, the state has documented 761 cases of measles, a number which has only continued to climb.

State officials said that in studying the virus, they determined the strain was first detected in Ontario, Canada, a city with a robust Mennonite community.

Authorities have said that the disease has circulated heavily through the communities due to religious and cultural reasons, and false information about vaccines, which has spread in recent years.

When the boy returned to his rural city, he passed on the disease to other classmates, which quickly spread it throughout Mennonite settlements through church and school gatherings, authorities said.

In early April, one 31-year-old Mennonite father died due to complications with measles and untreated diabetes.

Around half of the community remains unvaccinated, despite a strong push by health authorities to stop the spread of measles, according to official data.

Chihuahua’s Secretary of Health estimates that at least 90% of the people who have been infected were not vaccinated, and that around 15% of the people who have been infected have been hospitalized.

In March and April, infections began to quickly spread beyond the Mennonite settlement, infecting Indigenous Raramuri and Tarahumara people working in the community.

That later rippled out to other areas, like local populations in bigger cities, like Ciudad Juarez, a buzzing industrial city sharing a border with El Paso, Texas.
