STORYLINE:
Protesters marched in a May Day rally in New York on Thursday, calling for better workers’ rights, rule of law, and immigrant protections.

Hundreds of lawyers and their supporters gathered in the afternoon near the courthouses in Lower Manhattan for a “National Rule of Law Day” rally, to decry what some in attendance said was the Trump administration’s disrespect of the legal system.

Hours later, a few thousand more people were back again in the same public square for the start of a May Day march. The crowd included many labor activists and union members, but also people carrying LGTBQ flags and signs condemning Trump’s crackdown on immigrants. One person held up a cardboard sign that just said “resist.”

“We stand here together, united to say that the billionaire class should be afraid of the power of labor and everyday workers across the country,” said Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez at the rally.

In the United States, organizers framed this year’s International Workers’ Day protests as a pushback against what they see as the administration’s sweeping assault on labor protections, diversity initiatives and federal employees.

Protesters lined streets in many cities from New York to Philadelphia to Los Angeles and held a boisterous rally outside the White House in Washington.
