“Her husband was brutally and unfairly sent to a concentration camp in El Salvador. There he has had no contact with lawyers or a judge, and he committed no crime in that country. And I say to the working class, from Petare, today May 1, before more than a million men and women mobilized in Caracas, and before the millions who mobilized throughout the country: Sooner rather than later, we are going to rescue our girl Maikelys Espinoza and the 253 kidnapped in El Salvador safe and sound.”

STORYLINE:
Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro on Thursday called for the return of a two-year-old girl to her family in Venezuela after U.S. authorities deported her parents separately and kept the child in custody.
The case gained attention last week when Venezuelan Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello accused the U.S. of separating the girl from her parents during their deportation.
The child’s mother arrived in Venezuela last week on a flight without her daughter.
Her father had already been deported to El Salvador in March and is being held in a maximum-security prison, according to the family’s lawyers.
U.S. authorities allege that both parents are linked to the Tren de Aragua gang, which was designated a terrorist organization under former President Donald Trump.
Officials said the girl was removed from the deportation flight for her "safety and well-being."
During a speech following a pro-government march for International Workers’ Day, Maduro confirmed the child was not among the recent deportees sent back to Venezuela.
He accused the U.S. of "kidnapping" the girl and urged the U.S. justice system to intervene and return her to her mother.
While in U.S. custody, the parents denied any connection to the Tren de Aragua gang.
The Venezuelan government identified the father, Maiker Espinoza, as one of 252 Venezuelans currently held at El Salvador’s Terrorism Confinement Center (CECOT), a high-security prison built under President Nayib Bukele to detain gang members.
