STORYLINE:
Jalisa, I am your doctor.
Jalisa Burwell was one of the dozen pediatric patients who did “Star Wars”-themed crafts and played with a pair of droids during a celebration held Friday at a Detroit-area hospital.
“Whether you like ‘Star Wars,’ whether you like robots, whether you just want to smile, sometimes being in a hospital can be really tough,” said Dr. Kevin Feber (FEE’-behr), who built the replica R2-D2 and BB-8.
“It’s nice to see somebody, especially ‘Star Wars’ fans or somebody who’s interested in robotics or just who’s having a tough day and you get a smile out of them and you hope you can make their tough time a little better,” Feber said,
He’s a pediatric urologist at Corewell Health Children’s hospital in Royal Oak, Michigan.
Kids played “Star Wars” bingo, made light saber art and took away some themed prizes, including a Lego set. They range in age from 2 to 17 and suffer from various ailments, including cancer and bone infections. Some of them were awaiting surgery or are recovering from one.
“It’s really nice. It gives us something to do, and so we’re not stuck in our rooms all the time,” said Jalisa (jeh-LEE’-seh) Burwell, a 17-year-old patient.
Jalisa was all smiles when she walked into the room and saw the droids.
“I was so shocked,” she said. “I’m like, ‘Oh, they have the robots in here,’ and it’s like, ‘They’re moving, and they’re talking.’”
Friday’s event came two days before the unofficial “Star Wars” Day that falls on May 4 of each year – so named because of the famed Jedi phrase “May the force be with you.” As the pun goes, “May the fourth be with you.”
