STORYLINE:
Polls opened on Saturday morning for Australia’s general election, with high costs of living and a shortage of housing presenting as key issues for voters.

Voting in eastern Australia will continue from 8 a.m. (22:00 GMT Friday) until 6 p.m. (08:00 GMT Saturday). The polls open and close two hours later on the West Coast.

In Sydney, voters started lining up outside one of Bondi Beach’s polling stations at 7:30 a.m. (21:30 GMT Friday) with various issues on their mind.

For Stefano Redl, this election was all about foreign policy. Melissa Budiarto said that her main issue was "the cost of living crisis, just trying to make sure that the day-to-day things are still affordable."

Remo Giuffre said that he was hoping for the "return to a more free trade situation and less isolationism and nationalism."

Authorities said 8.6 million ballots from Australia’s 18.1 million registered voters had already been cast, but not counted, before Saturday since early and postal voting began on April 22.

Australia is among the few countries where voting is compulsory, a system that leans toward creating centrist governments.

At the last election in 2022, 90% of eligible voters cast ballots.
