STORYLINE:
Former German Chancellor Olaf Scholz formally handed over office duties to Friedrich Merz who was elected in a second ballot by lawmakers as post-World War II Germany’s 10th chancellor on Tuesday.
The politicians then exchanged handshakes and received flowers during the ceremony.
Merz had failed to win the first round in parliament in a historic defeat.
The conservative leader, 69, who succeeds Olaf Scholz, has vowed to prioritize European unity and the continent’s security as it grapples with the new Trump administration and Russia’s war on Ukraine.
"I am looking forward to the new task," he said in his speech during the handover.
