“And after 9-11, the 9-11 Commission convened, and one of their key recommendations was to improve identification of those using the Air Transportation Network. So this Real ID act was signed in 2005. We’ve been endeavoring to launch it since then."

5. SOUNDBITE (English) Thomas Carter, TSA Federal Security Director, New Jersey:
“So, when you go to that Motor Vehicle Commission, to get that Real ID driver’s license, you have to provide a lot more documentation that provides a higher degree of certainty that that individual identity is exactly accurate. There are other forms of Real ID, such as passports, passports, cards, and I refer anyone who has any questions on what is an acceptable Real ID to tsa.gov for a full list.”

8. SOUNDBITE (English) Thomas Carter, TSA Federal Security Director, New Jersey:
“Well, if you have a Real ID, and it’s compliant with the law, it’ll be business as usual. If you do not, that individual should be aware that they could be subjected to additional enhanced screening at the checkpoint. So that may cause a slight delay for them, so they should bake that into their time in travel plans.”

10. SOUNDBITE (English) Thomas Carter, TSA Federal Security Director, New Jersey:
“We have tremendous flexibility to provide additional screening above and beyond what would normally be done at the checkpoint. So we have a menu of items that we have the ability to use. I won’t get into detail on all of those, but they are processes that we have used in the past and that we use today, and they will just be added on to the normal checkpoint screening process. So it will be unpredictable to the passenger.”

12. SOUNDBITE (English) Mark Tipperman, Traveling to Halifax, Nova Scotia:
“I mean, people have had plenty of time to get prepared for it. So, I don’t object to it.”

“That’s fine, it’s perfect. I’ve been waiting five years. I’ve had it for five years at least, so back when they first started talking about it, it was a good idea back then. And I don’t remember the deadlines, but we got it right away, so it didn’t matter.”

16. SOUNDBITE (English) Maria Rierson, Traveling from Virginia to Spain with her husband:
“I think it’s good to have. I mean, it’s different to have a driver’s license, I think, than, you know, a personal ID. Because all your information is in it, so it’s better.”

19. SOUNDBITE (English) Lucas Krump, Traveling to San Francisco on business:
“I question the bureaucracy around it. It feels like attacks on everyday people, uh, having to upgrade their licenses and all of their identification for something that really, you know, seems like we’ve been fine without it.”
