9. SOUNDBITE (French) Cinzia Pasquali, painting restorer :
"The artwork has to suit the restoration. This is a monumental work. So when we have small-sized works, the public wouldn’t see anything. If we do it in front of them, it really has the interest of better revealing what restoration is in the public’s mind. I think it is still an unknown and artisanal work, even though today it is a very technical, very scientific job, based on a diagnosis, I would say, that comes from the medical field, so a medical diagnosis applied to works. And so I think the public is also asking to know what is happening, why we take a work that is all black, all dark, and then we see it again, much more colourful and fresh."

14. SOUNDBITE (French) Cinzia Pasquali, painting restorer :
"I think it’s more complicated to maintain a recent painting, so to speak, like this one, than a very old Renaissance painting, because sometimes the oil might not be completely dry. It sometimes takes one hundred and fifty years to fully polymerize the oil. And then at that time they used a lot of somewhat new techniques with semi-industrial things, so that complicates preservation. Regarding Courbet in particular, he is a painter who layers a lot, has a very instinctive, passionate painting style, I would say. And so he has a lot of material that layers, and sometimes the layers do not work well for conservation, and we have many problems. It’s, I would say, a complex restoration work."

18. SOUNDBITE (French) Cinzia Pasquali, painting restorer :
"In fact, it’s mainly about cleaning the painting of all the added varnish that has accumulated under the surface and is now altered, darkened. So you can no longer see the original colours at all. Also the lines you see are In fact the original seams, there are four in the painting, and so indeed, we will also treat the support to see if we can, I would not say make them disappear because they are sewn in overlock. So there is a bulge in the seam as it should be, so not make it disappear, but visually diminish it."
