STORYLINE:
Ten times a day for the past two weeks, Heydi Sánchez has walked two blocks from her parents’ house in Havana looking for internet connection to video call her husband and daughter and sing lullabies to help her sleep.
And every single time she has ended up crying.
Sánchez, a 44-year-old Cuban-born woman, was detained in Florida in April at a scheduled check-in appointment at an Immigration and Customs Enforcement office and two days later deported to Cuba.
Mother of a year and six-month-old girl and the wife of a U.S. citizen, Sánchez was still breastfeeding her daughter and as she sees her world crumbling, she is pleading with U.S. President Donald Trump to help her go back and reunite with her family.
“To the president (Trump) who has a family, he says he believes in God, and I believe in God too…I would like him to put his hand on his heart and please help us reunite our family," she told The Associated Press. "My baby is little, she needs me.”
Sánchez recalled harrowing experience of her deportation.
Sánchez said she went to an immigration appointment on April 22 with her infant daughter in her arms.
“When they put us on the plane, it was horrible. As the plane took off, I felt further away from my little girl, from my life, and from all the things I had built with my husband," she said.
Two days later, the mother was dressed in a gray jumpsuit, handcuffed, and put on a plane to Cuba with 81 other people.
Sanchez cries looking at photos of her daughter, and said she feels mentally destroyed.
After arriving like hundreds of thousands of Cuban immigrants across the southern border of the United States in 2019, Sanchez appeared before a judge once without problems but was not on time for the second appointment.
