“I’m standing here in front of the Shuafat Boys’ School. This is an UNRWA (United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees) school, the UN Agency for Palestinian Refugees, in the Shuafat refugee camp in East Jerusalem. It’s one of six schools that Israeli authorities have said need to shut down by May 8th. Israeli authorities stormed these schools about a month ago, saying they needed to shut as part of a broad-scale attempt to scale down UNRWA on Israeli territory."

7. SOUNDBITE (English) Julia Frankel, The Associated Press:
"Now, what this means for the camp is dire. There are three schools here. They’re the main source of education for the camp’s 600-some children, ages from grades one through nine. And parents say they’re not sure what will happen if forces come and do shut down these schools come May 8th. If the students go to schools in West Jerusalem or Israeli schools, that will involve them crossing a separation barrier that separates the Shuafat camp from Jerusalem. And parents are scared to send their children past that barrier. Meanwhile, Palestinian schools are full and crowded. UNRWA really provides the services here for students educationally that parents say they cannot find anywhere else."

9. SOUNDBITE (English) Julia Frankel, The Associated Press:
"We’ve just been visiting the school, and while we were here, Israeli forces came into Shuafat camp, which is not an unusual occurrence. And they shot tear gas into the main yard of the school sending children coughing, running, forcing them to evacuate certain classrooms. We had to don masks and glasses. While firing tear gas is unusual, teachers tell us it is not unusual for forces to enter the school and disrupt the school day and as everyone here, you know, waits for May 8th, waits to see what will happen, it’s unclear what the future is educationally for the children of Shuafat camp.”

STORYLINE:
Israeli authorities have ordered six United Nations schools for the children of Palestinian refugees in East Jerusalem to close this week.

The impending school closures are set to take effect on Friday.

The move comes after Israel banned the U.N. agency for Palestinian refugees, called UNRWA, from operating on Israeli territory following a long campaign against the agency, which Israel claims harbors militants.

This will leave nearly 800 Palestinian children across east Jerusalem in limbo.

The Israeli Ministry of Education says it will place the students into other Jerusalem schools.

But parents, teachers and administrators caution that closing the main schools for the children of Palestinian refugees in east Jerusalem promises a surge in absenteeism.

UNRWA is the main provider of education and health care to Palestinian refugees across east Jerusalem, which Israel captured in the 1967 Mideast war.

Israel has annexed east Jerusalem and considers the entire city its unified capital.
