STORYLINE:
Faithful on Thursday expressed their delight as white smoke flowed from the Sistine Chapel chimney, indicating that cardinals had picked a successor to the late Pope Francis.

The cardinals named Robert Prevost of the United States as head of the Catholic church and the American will take the papal name of Leo XIV.

Faithful Annamaria Alessandrin said it has been an "exciting moment" to witness the white smoke and expressed her hope that the new pontiff would be a "great successor" of Pope Francis.

Prevost had been a leading candidate except for his nationality.

There had long been a taboo against a U.S. pope, given the geopolitical power already wielded by the United States in the secular sphere.

But Prevost, a Chicago native, was seemingly eligible also because he’s a Peruvian citizen and lived for years in Peru, first as a missionary and then as an archbishop.
