Prague – 8 May 2025
1. Various shots of people building a barricade as part of reenactment
2. Man writing sign (in Czech) reading "Death to German killers"
3. SOUNDBITE (Czech) Milos Skorepa, history enthusiast and participant in the battle:
"So participation at the barricade is, of course, a very interesting thing from a historical point of view, because it is a reminder of our, we can say, recent history. 80 years is basically quite a short time for there to still be memorials and for us to be able to really remember and honour the memory of our grandfathers and great-grandfathers."
4. ‘Rebels’ waiting for the attack of the ‘German’ forces
5. Various of shooting and man lying "dead"
6. SOUNDBITE (Slovak) Marek Mesko, battle participant:
"I’ve been involved in historical reenactments for a very long time. Prague and the uprising against Nazism at the end of the war is a very important event to commemorate, and reenactment is also a tool for the general public to see live, at least a reminder, of what that might look like. And that’s why it’s actually such a role for us to commemorate it. And that’s actually why I’m doing the reenactment."
7. ‘German’ forces retreating
8. Various shots of post-battle first aid
9. SOUNDBITE (Czech) Milos Skorepa, history enthusiast and participant in the battle:
"It’s a rare opportunity to meet friends who share a love for history."
10. ‘Rebels’ singing the Czech/Czechoslovak national anthem
11. Various of people waving flag
STORYLINE:
People in Prague commemorated VE day on Thursday with a large-scale reenactment of the 1945 Prague Uprising against the Nazis.
Around 400 people, dressed in period uniforms and armed with authentic weapons, recreated the scenes of urban warfare that marked the city’s liberation.
Included were original WWII military vehicles.
The event took place in the Nusle district, where some of the bloodiest clashes between Prague’s resistance fighters and the occupying Nazi forces took place during the final days of World War II.
Participant and history enthusiast Milos Skorepa said "80 years is basically quite a short time for there to still be memorials and for us to be able to really remember and honour the memory of our grandfathers and great-grandfathers."
