STORYLINE:
Americans across the United States reacted with shock and excitement after the Conclave ended on Thursday and Chicago-born Cardinal Robert Prevost was elected as the new Pope.
"I thought it was going to be a European," said New Yorker TJ Strazzeri outside of Saint Patrick’s cathedral in Manhattan.
"America certainly has a lot of power in the world, and I thought they might not want that concentration of power," Jen Fulwiler from Austin, TX told the Associated Press.
Cardinal Robert Prevost has taken the name Leo XIV. The missionary who spent his career ministering in Peru and took over the Vatican’s powerful office of bishops was elected the first pope from the United States in the 2,000-year history of the Catholic Church.
"They’re supposed to be a Pope for the Catholic Church of the world who happens to now be an American," stressed Father Michael Liliedahl, Parochial vicar at St Stephen Catholic Church in San Francisco.
In his first words as Pope Francis ’ successor, uttered from the loggia of St. Peter’s Basilica, Leo, 69, said, “Peace be with you,” and emphasized a message of peace, dialogue and missionary evangelization.
