STORYLINE:
Faithful in Mexico and Brazil, the countries with the most Catholics in Latin America, reacted to the election of Cardinal Robert Prevost as Pope Leo XIV.

Prevost, a little known missionary from Chicago, had spent most of his time serving in Peru and was appointed bishop by late Pope Francis in 2020.

"Let him be a pope who brings people together, like Francis was, who comes to bring people together, not to divide people, to welcome everyone," said faithful Carmen Campos, outside Rio de Janeiro’s Metropolitan Cathedral.

In his first words as Pope Francis’ successor, uttered from the loggia of St. Peter’s Basilica, Leo, 69, said, “Peace be with you,” and emphasized a message of peace, dialogue and missionary evangelization.

He wore the traditional red cape of the papacy — a cape that Francis had eschewed on his election in 2013.

He spoke to the crowd in Italian and Spanish, but not English.

It took only two days for Catholic cardinals to elect a successor to Pope Francis. That’s among the shortest conclaves in recent decades, but not the shortest ever.
