"(I want) to welcome the election of the new Pope. Indeed, an American by origin was elected Pope who he took the name Leo XIV. I remember from the little I learned in Rome that Leo XIII had been distinguished for his social teaching and for his social work. We hope that Leo XIV will also welcome the contribution of his Church to the world."

STORYLINE:
Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, the spiritual leader of the world’s Orthodox Christians, has welcomed the election of Pope Leo XIV as the new head of the Roman Catholic Church.
“I greet the new Pope, the new Bishop of Rome, with great brotherly love in Christ and great expectations,” Bartholomew said at an event in Athens.
Reflecting on his longstanding cooperation with the late Pope Francis, Bartholomew expressed hope for continued progress in Catholic-Orthodox relations.
He spoke of "a new era to our bilateral relations" and "in the relations between East and West, for the good of all humanity."
Bartholomew and Francis collaborated on a wide range on global challenges including climate change, migration, and the societal impact of rapid technological advancement.
