STORYLINE:
Aspirations that the new pope would come from Asia for the first time did not happen, but Filipinos welcomed the first-ever American pontiff, Leo IV, Friday and expressed hopes Catholics worldwide would support him in an era troubled by wars, poverty and geopolitical strife.

The Philippines is the largest Roman Catholic nation in Asia and there were hopes the late Pope Francis would be succeeded by a prominent Filipino Cardinal, Luis Antonio Tagle, from the laidback city of Imus just south of Manila.

Alexandra Bonilla, a 20-year-old student, said she’d wanted the candidate from the Philippines but was happy to "accept this choice because this was God’s plan.”

Pope Leo XIV “will face a lot of trials,” said Mechaela Rejano, Bonilla’s classmate in a tourism management school.

“I hope he will survive and provide a solution to all these challenges.”
