4. SOUNDBITE (English) Father John Horan, Carmelite friar from Florida:
“Oh, very happy about the election, right. Now, of course, the fact that he’s American is wonderful, but the fact is that he is the type of person that he is, that he has a missionary spirit, a missionary heart, all the years he lived in Peru, he’s certainly a very educated man. And listening to him last night speak about his first wish for the church, for the world, for peace and certainly, he worked very closely with Pope Francis and we look forward to continuing some of the good works of Pope Francis, now with Pope Leo, and see the gifts and what he’s gonna bring as the Holy Father, the gifts that he’ll bring as the universal pastor to the church and to the world. So yeah it’s a very exciting time, a new beginning, we’re very, very excited, very hopeful.”

“It was a surprise because we didn’t expect it, but we are very happy. We were very impressed by what you said, especially all the times you emphasised the need for peace. One thing we all need is peace, there are too many wars. So we are surprised but overjoyed.”

STORYLINE:
The Catholic Church has a new leader and congratulations are pouring in as Pope Leo XIV prepares to celebrate his first Mass on Friday, a day after his historic election as the first North American pope in the church’s 2,000-year history.
On Thursday, Cardinal Robert Prevost emerged onto the loggia of St. Peter’s Basilica at the Vatican, following the conclave and the appearance of white smoke from the Sistine Chapel chimney, signaling that a new pontiff has been chosen.
His election overcame the traditional prohibition against a pope from the United States.
Pilgrims and tourists were in St Peter’s Square on Friday leafing through the Vatican newspaper l’Osservatore Romano and enthusiastically commenting on the election of the new pontiff.
"Oh, very happy about the election, right. Now, of course, the fact that he’s American is wonderful, but the fact is that he is the type of person that he is, that he has a missionary spirit, a missionary heart, all the years he lived in Peru, he’s certainly a very educated man" Father John Horan of the Carmelite friar from Florida said.
