Now much of the city has been rebuilt thanks to efforts by the citizens and funding from UNESCO and the United Arab Emirates.

Markets are busy, mosques are full and the tourists have started to return.

With centuries of cultural heritage destroyed, the restored Mosul is also reclaiming its place on the international cultural landscape with a new exhibition in Venice.

The mosque is almost complete after a extension restoration project which included the mosque, minaret and two churches in the Old City area in West Mosul.
