The Newark Liberty International airport has seen three major air traffic control outages in just over two weeks, with radar and communications systems failing on April 28, May 9, and again this past Sunday. The Federal Aviation Administration, the FAA says backup systems worked in the most recent incident, but safety concerns are mounting.
Newark now leads the nation in flight delays and cancellations – nationwide those run in the thousands. FAA officials and airlines met again Thursday to discuss cutting flight volumes, citing not enough controllers to manage the growing traffic. The Trump administration has unveiled a plan to modernize the air traffic control system within four years. But controllers and travellers are demanding quicker action to ensure passenger safety.
