STORYLINE:
Top Chinese diplomat Wang Yi on Monday greeted various Latin American foreign ministers in Beijing ahead of a ministerial meeting.
Wang held talks with Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez, Uruguayan Foreign Minister Mario Lubetkin, Peruvian Foreign Minister Elmer Schialer, and Venezuelan Foreign Minister Yvan Gil in the morning.
Wang recognized the friendship and practical cooperation between China and the Latin American countries during the talks with his counterparts.
The ministerial meeting between China and the 33-member Community of Latin American and Caribbean States is scheduled for Tuesday.
President Xi Jinping will attend and deliver a speech at the opening ceremony, according to state news agency Xinhua.
Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva is also in the country for a state visit and is expected to attend the forum.
This year’s forum marks the 10th anniversary of the China-CELAC Forum, a platform established to enhance collaboration between China and Latin American and Caribbean countries.
