"As a physician and the person in charge of receiving the returning captives to hospitals and their subsequent medical care, I must emphasise that with every passing day they are held in such conditions their health is subject to clear and immediate danger. As a physician and as a human being, I am deeply concerned about the condition of all those who remain in the captivity of Palestinian terrorist organisations and pray for the speedy return home. Thank you very much."
STORYLINE:
The head of Israeli health ministry’s medical division said on Monday she was "thrilled" by the release of hostage Edan Alexander.

Hamas on Monday released the Israeli-American soldier who had been held hostage in Gaza for more than 19 months, offering a goodwill gesture toward the Trump administration that could lay the groundwork for a new ceasefire with Israel.

Dr. Hagar Mizrahi said that due to the conditions they are being held in the health of hostages was "subject to clear and immediate danger."

"The entire Israeli healthcare system stands ready to provide Edan and his family with the best medical and psychological treatment," she added, speaking to reporters in Tel Aviv.

Alexander was 19 when he was taken from his military base in southern Israel during Hamas’ cross-border attack on October7, 2023, which set off the war in Gaza.

He had been the last living American hostage in Gaza and was the first hostage released since Israel shattered an eight-week ceasefire with Hamas in March and unleashed fierce strikes on Gaza that have killed hundreds of Palestinians.

Israel says 58 hostages remain in captivity, with about 23 of them said to be alive.

Many of the 250 hostages taken by Hamas-led militants in the 2023 attack were freed in ceasefire deals.
