STORYLINE:
Hundreds of Iraqi pilgrims departed from Baghdad to Saudi Arabia on Thursday to perform the annual Islamic Hajj pilgrimage.

The group is one of many making similar journeys from airports across the country to undertake the trip of a lifetime.

Ahmad Salman from the Iraqi Hajj authority said they were facilitating the departure of 773 pilgrims on Thursday alone.

In total, Iraq’s share of this year’s Hajj pilgrimage is 33,690 pilgrims including travelers from the Kurdish region, according to the country’s Hajj authority.

"This is the greatest wish for a person, to perform Hajj and visit the House of God," said Sabriya Ibrahim, who was waiting at Baghdad airport to depart to Saudi Arabia.

The annual Hajj is one of the five pillars of Islam, and Muslims are required to undertake it at least once in their lives if they are physically and financially able.

Every year, Hajj pilgrimage to the holy city of Mecca brings together millions of Muslims from around the world, making it one of the world’s largest religious gatherings.

This year’s pilgrimage is scheduled to begin on the evening of June 4 and conclude on June 9.

For those performing the Hajj, it is a profound spiritual experience that wipes away sins, brings them closer to God and highlights Muslim unity.
