Voting has ended in the first round of Poland’s presidential election to choose the successor to conservative Andrzej Duda.
Exit polls show that frontrunner Ra-fow Chas-KOV-ski — the liberal mayor of Warsaw — and right-wing historian Karol Nav-ROT-ski are safely through to a run-off election on June 1st. Foreign policy dominated the campaign, including the war in Ukraine — and its consequences for Poland. The post of president there is largely ceremonial — but it comes with a powerful right of veto.
