2. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Mounir Younes, journalist and economic writer:
"The impact will be positive but could take some time, depending on political stability, meaning that the current regime remains stable. The lifting of the sanctions would give them a dosage of stability and international support. And as a result, gradually the Syrian economy will of course benefit. Of course, there are large-scale construction projects (that could be done) in Syria, including those related to energy and infrastructure. And of course, lifting the sanctions will benefit regional and international companies."

4. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Mounir Younes, journalist and economic writer:
"The matter is linked to political stability. Syria is currently in a transitional phase led by Ahmad al-Sharaa. He has gotten a dosage of Arab and international support. And therefore, if that situation becomes stable and there are reforms, we will then see Syrians returning to their country if they are provided with opportunities."

6. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Mounir Younes, journalist and economic writer:
"Banking reforms are needed in Syria. This system is inherited from the previous regime and requires reforms. If these reforms to the banking and financial system in general are accelerated, as we mentioned earlier, remittances will increase and we will see banks attracting investments. Consequently, they will play their role in lending, which means (supporting) development, financing investments and creating job opportunities. However, the matter will take some time, as it is all linked to political stability."

8. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Mounir Younes, journalist and economic writer:
"After the lifting of sanctions, Syria faces the challenge of achieving political stability during the transitional phase and involving most factions in governance and the system. The Syrian regime is also expected to put an end to the practices of certain factions that have been heavily criticized by the West. We have witnessed some of the most notorious massacres in several areas, as well as human rights violations."

STORYLINE:
A Lebanese economist said Wednesday that the impact of U.S. President Donald Trump’s announcement on easing sanctions in Syria will be positive but "could take some time," depending on the stability of the country.

"The lifting of the sanctions would give them a dosage of stability and international support. And as a result, gradually the Syrian economy will of course benefit," said Mounir Younes.

Trump’s announcement when enacted could end decades of sanctions Washington has slapped on Syria.

Earlier in the day, Trump met with the new Syrian leader, a onetime insurgent, before wrapping up his visit to Saudi Arabia and heading to Qatar, the second leg of his three-nation Middle East tour this week.

Trump said the rapprochement with Syria came at the urging of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

"There is a new government that will hopefully succeed," Trump said of Syria, adding, "I say good luck, Syria. Show us something special."

Trump received a lavish welcome Tuesday in Riyadh, where he announced, he would move to lift sanctions on Syria to give the country "a chance at peace."

Trump and Prince Mohammed, the kingdom’s de facto ruler, signed a host of economic and bilateral agreements
