“The great benefit we have here, besides the environmental aspect, is being able to rescue fruits that are no longer commercially viable, they are jewels of our Atlantic Forest that have been lost over time due to the growth of cities. So in a public park, people will be able to enjoy this again."

STORYLINE:
An ambitious Brazilian urban fruit tree planting project within a green corridor around Niteroi’s Piratininga Lagoon is beginning to bear fruit.

Since April about 1,000 trees and seedlings have been planted in the Niteroi City Hall-led project that expects to plant 5,000 fruit-bearing and native trees over the coming months.

“The great benefit we have here, besides the environmental aspect, is being able to rescue fruits that are no longer commercially viable, they are jewels of our Atlantic Forest that have been lost over time due to the growth of cities," explained Niteroi city hall’s biologist Alexandre de Moraes.

Some trees are already showing signs of blossoms and fruit in Brazil’s autumn sunshine.

The project spans an 11-kilometer (6.8 mile) corridor and species being planted include java plum, genipap, Brazilian cherry, Surinam cherry, mulberry, strawberry guava, uvaia, wild cherry, cashew tree and white pepper.

The massive public orchard will allow residents of Rio’s sister city of Niteroi to pick fresh fruit straight from the trees.
