4. SOUNDBITE (Polish) Rafal Trzaskowski, presidential candidate for Civic Coalition party:
"Today, this is exactly what it is about, to be strong as a state, but also to be strong in the European Union. Because today the issue of security is on everyone’s lips and in our hearts. In order to be safe, we must have the best possible relations with the United States, and these must be relations of partnership."

9. SOUNDBITE (Polish) Slawomir Mentzen, presidential candidate for Confederation Party:
"We want so much for something to finally change in Poland, for things to finally be different, for the most important things for Poles and for Poland to finally move forward, and not just stand still like they do now. Because the politicians who have been governing Poland for 20 years only talk, and there’s no one there to do the work."

11. SOUNDBITE (English) Jacek Kucharczyk, Polish Institute of Public Affairs president:
"The stakes of these elections is really tremendous for the current coalition and the people concerned with the future of Polish democracy. This is about democratic reform and restoring the rule of law in Poland with cooperation from the new president. For the Law and Justice (Party), the main competitor of the current ruling coalition, it’s really a question about their future as a key political actor. Poland now is one of the key players within the EU and key in mobilizing other EU members and international partners towards sustaining Ukrainian resistance to Russia and building up Ukrainians’ position vis-à-vis Russia. So if the elections go wrong from the point of view of the ruling coalition then it would also have repercussions for the entire European politics vis-à-vis Russia."

STORYLINE:
A war next door in Ukraine. Migration pressure at the borders. Russian sabotage across the region. Doubts about America’s commitment to Europe’s security.
Security looms large in Poland’s upcoming presidential election — but so do other fundamental issues, including the future of the country’s democracy and its place in Europe.
With 13 candidates in the running, a decisive first-round victory by any one candidate is unlikely.
Poland’s geographic location gives added importance to this election at time of war in Ukraine.
