STORYLINE:
Supporters of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) held rallies in Indian-controlled Kashmir on Thursday, waving Indian flags and chanting pro-India slogans.
At a rally in Pahalgam, the site of a deadly attack on tourists last month, hoteliers, pony riders and tour guides gathered to cheer India’s armed forces.
The militaries of India and Pakistan had been engaged in one of their most serious confrontations in decades since last Wednesday, when India struck targets inside Pakistan it said were affiliated with militants responsible for the massacre of 26 tourists last month in Indian-controlled Kashmir.
Pakistan has denied any links to the attackers.
After India’s strikes in Pakistan, the two sides exchanged heavy fire along their de facto borders, followed by missile and drone strikes into each other’s territories, mainly targeting military installations and airbases.
On Saturday, the two countries agreed to a US-brokered ceasefire a day earlier after talks to defuse their most serious military confrontation in decades.
“People rallied in the streets for national unity and sovereignty, coming together to send a message to the enemy that in the future, any hostile action will be met with a strong response,” said Syed Rafiq Shah, a Bharatiya Janata Party supporter attending another rally in the region’s main city Srinagar.
Both India and Pakistan administer parts of Kashmir but claim it in its entirety.
