The special feature of this trade fair, which makes it different from the 16th Autumn International Trade Fair that was held last year, is that there are lots of products which are recognized as well-known and renowned at this trade fair.”

STORYLINE:
Sanctions-hit North Korea staged its first international Spring trade fair after the coronavirus pandemic this week.

The event, officially called ‘The 23rd Pyongyang Spring International Trade Fair,’ runs from Monday 12 May to Friday 16 May.

Before the pandemic, the fair was an annual event for decades.

Chinese companies used to take up most of the booths, selling everything from bras and computers to microwaves. And the North Korean people who could get in, would pull out U.S. dollars to buy.

This time, the venue is different, and it’s not clear who is there. The North Korean official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) said that companies from Russia, China, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Mongolia, and Thailand took part. But it was not possible to see what they are trying to sell.

Instead, North Korean authorities wanted to highlight their new smartphones, and their new shampoo and skin care products.

North Korean citizens normally do not travel independently. If they have smartphones, it is not possible to make calls with foreigners, and it is not possible to access the internet.
