“Well the farmers that we have met here today are saying they are happy to stay in South Africa. All they need is for us to work with them to address the challenges they face. One of them is rural roads. They want us to work with them to deal with that. Then there’s rural safety because we know over the years, people in the farming communities have been attacked, and crime has been rife. They want us to work with them on that so that we can deal with those issues.”

STORYLINE:
South African President Paul Mashatile on Thursday urged white South African farmers to stay in South Africa.
This follows the recent departure of 49 Afrikaners to the United States.
The Trump administration brought more than 50 white South Africans to the U.S. this week as refugees, saying they are members of the minority Afrikaner group and are being persecuted by their Black-led government and exposed to race-based violence.
Mashatile was attending the National Maize Producers Organisation (Nampo Show), which is considered the biggest agricultural show in Southern Africa.
“The farmers that we have met here today are saying they are happy to stay in South Africa. All they need is for us to work with them to address the challenges they face. One of them is rural roads. They want us to work with them to deal with that. Then there’s rural safety because we know over the years, people in the farming communities have been attacked, and crime has been rife. They want us to work with them on that so that we can deal with those issues,” Mashatile said.
The Deputy President also called upon Afrikaners who were planning on leaving, to stay and help grow the country.
“We’re not going anywhere and we do encourage those who are leaving to please stay. There’s no need to leave, let’s build this beautiful country.”
