Tirana, Albania – 16 May 2025
1. Various of roundtable between Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy who is talking on phone (this is not the separate call with US President Donald Trump) , French President Emmanuel Macron, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer
2. SOUNDBITE (English) Keir Starmer, British Prime Minister:
“So we just had a meeting with President Zelenskyy and then a phone call with President Trump to discuss the developments in the negotiations today. And the Russian position is clearly unacceptable, and not for the first time, and so as a result of that meeting with President Zelenskyy and the discussion with President Trump, we are now closely aligning or coordinating our responses, and we’ll continue to do so.”
3. SOUNDBITE (French) Emmanuel Macron, French President:
“A word for the French press. As Mr. Prime Minister just said, all of us, with President Zelenskyy, as we did in Kyiv a few days ago, we talked about the meetings that took place in Istanbul where the Russian delegation decided to exclude the American delegation. All of us, just now, discussed with President Trump in order to all agree that it is unacceptable, for a second time, that Russia, President Putin don’t answer to the requests that were made by the Americans, supported by Ukraine and the Europeans. No ceasefire and no meeting on a decision-taking level, and no answer on the ceasefire. So in this context, we’ll continue to coordinate with our European partners, the Coalition of the Willing, and the United States. There will be new talks among us in the coming hours and feedback and we will give the required answers. We continue to fight for peace and we continue to be by the side of President Zelenskyy and closely coordinate with the United States.”
4. Various of roundtable between German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, French President Emmanuel Macron, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer
STORYLINE:
European leaders have agreed with U.S. President Donald Trump that Russia’s position in ceasefire talks is unacceptable and they intend to coordinate a response, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer said on Friday.

“We just had a meeting with President Zelenskyy and then a phone call with President Trump to discuss the developments in the negotiations today, and the Russian position is clearly unacceptable,” Starmer told reporters.

“As a result of that meeting with President Zelenskyy, under discussion with President Trump, we are now closely aligning and coordinating our responses and will continue to do so,” he said, as European leaders held a summit in Albania.

He said the decision with Trump was also agreed on with the leaders of France, Germany and Poland.

Macron confirmed "there will be new talks among us in the coming hours."
