STORYLINE:
Her Royal Highness Princess of Hanover, better known as Princess Caroline of Monaco, attended the Les Ballets of Monte Carlo performance at the National Theatre of Cuba in Havana on Friday.
The Princess is the president of the ballet company she established in 1985 in honor of her mother, Princess Grace.
The Ballet of Monte Carlo returned to Cuba for the second time after 10 years, featuring the entire company of 50 dancers and eight musicians who performed in the tour de force ballet "Core Meu."
The ballet has music composed by Antonio Castrignanò, who plays it on stage with the dancers, and choreography by the company’s artistic director, Jean-Christophe Maillot.
Maillot explained that he chose this particular ballet because he was sure the vibrant music of Puglia, southeastern Italy, and the powerful energy of the dance “It is about the pleasure of dancing on stage and hoping the Cuban audience will dance with us.”
Princess Caroline arrived at the theatre and was immediately surrounded by journalists and curious members of the public who wanted to see her and take photos.
The city of Monte Carlo in Monaco is famous for its extravagance, upscale casinos, and Formula One race. However, it also boasts a significant tradition in the ballet world as the home of the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo in the early 20th century.
The ballet was supported throughout the years by the royal family of Prince Rainier III and Princess Grace of Monaco and has been carried on by the new royal generation with Princess Caroline of Hanover.
Dancer Alvaro Prieto says the ballet “radiates energy” and hopes it will transmit that energy to the audience.
The show met all expectations, and the audience responded with roaring applause and joined in the dance.
Les Ballets de Monte Carlo will perform this Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. With tickets costing less than a dollar in Cuba, all performances are sold out.
