++STARTS ON SOUNDBITE++
1. SOUNDBITE (English) Lily Katz, witness:
(Journalist: Can you start by telling what you were doing here and what you saw?)
"We were just getting dinner, we went to TimeOut Market, we were coming out, we do this quite a bit, we sit out here and watch the sunset."
SOUNDBITE (English) Sydney Neidell, witness:
"And the boat kind of just like going past the bridge and we just saw the top of it snap off and it just kept on snapping and there was, I think there was a person dangling from the top."
SOUNDBITE (English) Lily Katz, witness:
"We saw someone dangling and I couldn’t tell if it was just blurry or it was just my eyes, and we were able to zoom in on our phones. And there was someone dangling from a harness, from the top for at least 15 minutes before they were able to rescue them. And then the national guard came I think, the firefighters, everyone."
SOUNDBITE (English) Sydney Neidell, witness:
"Yeah and then we just stayed the entire time watching the whole rescue. Someone was dangling from the top. They were trying to pull him up. There was a bunch of people up top. It was just at first like we didn’t know what was happening."
SOUNDBITE (English) Lily Katz, witness:
"….what was going on. We thought it was a show honestly. And then it just kept getting worse."
(Journalist: Was the boat like coming all the way up the river or was it just sort of slowly moving?)
SOUNDBITE (English) Sydney Neidell, witness:
"The boat was coming across the river. I think it was like a training navy."
SOUNDBITE (English) Lily Katz, witness:
"I thought maybe they were coming to park right here and then I saw that they were trying to retract from the bridge, that they were already hit. Because if you zoom in and see the boat, you can see like there was a high part…"
SOUNDBITE (English) Sydney Neidell, witness:
There was a higher… the boat, it snapped off, so whatever you’re seeing now of the boat, there was more to it and it literally snapped off in half.
(Journalist: That’s wild. And what was the reaction of people down here?)
Everyone was kind of, I heard like gasps and screaming."
SOUNDBITE (English) Lily Katz, witness:
"Everyone was just gawking."
SOUNDBITE (English) Sydney Neidell, witness:
"I mean the crowd here right now it’s kind of empty, but we couldn’t move before. Everyone had their phones out recording it, it was crazy."
(Journalist: And you guys locals or were you just visiting?)
SOUNDBITE (English) Sydney Neidell, witness:
"She’s in Brooklyn, I’m in the city."
SOUNDBITE (English) Lily Katz, witness:
"We were actually, right before we sat down there was a bride and groom in the (inaudible) area."
(Journalist: And how long did it take for the emergency vehicles to start coming?)
"I don’t know."
SOUNDBITE (English) Sydney Neidell, witness:
"It wasn’t it wasn’t that long after but…"
SOUNDBITE (English) Lily Katz, witness:
"Everyone came to the scene. There was the firefighters, the police department, the helicopters were in the sky, everything."
(Journalist: And have they started bringing people in the boats or are they still…)
"Yeah."
SOUNDBITE (English) Sydney Neidell, witness:
I think they’re done. I think they got mostly everyone. We had our cameras, we were kind of zooming in. We saw someone being stretchered off the boat into a smaller boat. We saw two of that happen. But I think they’ve been like kind of driving them over there and taking them out. We’ve seen ambulances come in back and forth throughout the past like 1 hour, 2 hours."
