STORYLINE:
Mexican and Chilean organ grinders delighted passersby in Mexico City as they paraded through the capital on Sunday.
“We are the soundtrack of the city,” said Gabriel Rivera, who has been an organ grinder for many years. “We can’t talk about Mexico City without listening to an organ grinder.”
During the third Festival of Organ Grinders, Chilean organ grinders and street performers known as “Chinchineros,” played their drums and twirled, brining a vibrant and rhythmic one-man band performance to the Mexican public.
Chilean organ grinders are part of the cultural heritage of the country since 2017 when it turned from a marginal profession to a very appreciated one.
"These things give us identity, and I think that when one knows where one comes from and embraces one’s roots, I think one can be happier in life because one knows who one is," said Roberto Yurisic, a Chilean organ grinder who migrated to China where he plays.
These organ grinders and Chinchineros hope that people in Mexico and across Latin America can recognize their artistic skill and traditions.
