"It will also affect the security of the citizens. Those people who are deported, some of them are criminals, they have been involved in crimes. So once they are brought to South Sudan, that means that criminal activities will also increase, where the government will not have full control of the citizens around and those criminals.”

"So far the government did not make any statement addressing that issue. But I believe there is a reason as to why they take that move. I believe it’s because the country is at a very vulnerable position. It could be also because of the war that is ongoing and the revocation of the visas that happened a couple months ago. And I believe all of those mistakes are the reason as to why we face such consequences. But let’s wait and see what the government has (agreed) with the US government to host those people. Maybe there is an agreement.”

STORYLINE:
Some South Sudanese residents on Wednesday weighed in on reports that the US apparently is deporting migrants to their country.

If the deportations are confirmed, that means people from Vietnam, Cuba and elsewhere are being sent to a nation they have no link to, thousands of miles from where they want to be.

The Trump administration’s pressure on South Sudan to take in deportees, including foreign ones, is in sharp contrast to Washington’s past warm embrace.

Now there is less support than ever for most of South Sudan’s over 11 million people because of the cuts in U.S. aid.

Martin Mawut Ochalla, a 28-year-old student at the University of Juba, said he was worried that the arrival of the migrants could negatively affect security in South Sudan.

Chuong Yang, a manager of a youth club, meanwhile said he hoped there would be an agreement between South Sudan and the US government.

South Sudan’s police spokesperson, Maj. Gen. James Monday Enoka, told The Associated Press on Wednesday that no migrants had arrived in the country and that if they do, they would be investigated and "redeported to their correct country" if found not to be South Sudanese.

Some countries do not accept deportations from the United States.

That has led the administration to strike agreements with other countries, including Panama, to house them.

The U.S. has sent Venezuelans to a notorious prison in El Salvador under an 18th-century wartime law, an action being contested in the courts.

South Sudan has endured repeated waves of violence since gaining independence from Sudan in 2011 amid hopes it could use its large oil reserves to bring prosperity to a region long battered by poverty.

The U.S is one of the biggest donors to South Sudan’s humanitarian aid programs with the total funding in 2024 standing at over $640 million.
