“We are able to engage with all parties, number one. We are able to secure a ceasefire. And number three, we are able to ensure that all humanitarian aid can go to any subregion controlled by any group. There are three groups now. So thus far to me, it’s a good beginning,”

“Has it escalated to a situation where it is potentially very explosive? No. Has it proceeded to the extent that no possibility of talks or negotiations like Ukraine, Russia? No, no, no. It’s far from that.”
STORYLINE:
Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim on Wednesday said a ceasefire in Myanmar, increased engagement and widening access for humanitarian aid after March’s devastating earthquake marked a good start to push the peace process forward in the war-torn nation.

Anwar said he believed “remarkable progress” has been made recently in Myanmar, over four years after the army ousted an elected government that sparked widespread rebellion and a civil war.

The military junta and the shadow National Unity Government have agreed to a temporary truce following the earthquake that killed over 3,700 people.

Anwar himself held talks with both sides and even though talks currently focused on humanitarian aid, he said “we inevitably would touch on the issue of Myanmar’s return to the ASEAN framework."
