A new aid system for Gaza, endorsed by Israel, has started operations. The US-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation has taken over aid distribution, despite objections from the UN. Critics say it puts Gazans at risk by limiting food distribution to specific areas and undermining other relief efforts.
Israel said 170 United Nations trucks carrying food and medicine – but much less than what the UN says is needed – crossed into Gaza on Monday. Many of Gaza’s two million residents still face severe food shortages, after Israel blocked all supplies for almost three months. Israel says its new system is needed to stop Hamas stealing supplies. Hamas has warned Palestinians not to cooperate. The head of the aid foundation quit unexpectedly on Sunday.
