STORYLINE:
Venezuelans reacted on Monday to the government’s expected sweeping victory in parliamentary and regional elections marked by the boycott of the opposition.
"I think it was as everyone expected: more of the same. No, I didn’t vote" said Danny Hernandez, with weights balanced on his back.
The foregone conclusion of the election, with the heavy hand of Venezuela’s ruling party involved in the vote, kept Venezuelans away from the polls. Voting centers were left practically empty at times.
Electoral authorities said 42.66% of registered voters cast ballots across the country. Some 21.4 million people were registered, meaning the National Electoral Council claimed that about 9.12 million voters participated.
This is a figure that many Venezuelans distrust for what they saw on election day.
It was a stark contrast with the enthusiasm of the July 28 presidential election, when some people queued overnight and lines stretched for blocks.
Voter participation, in the eyes of the opposition, legitimizes Maduro’s claim to power and his government’s repressive apparatus.
After the July presidential election detained more than 2,000 people including protesters, poll workers, political activists and minors, to quash dissent.
