“Also, it is crazy surreal being in this room right now. I used to look at this stage like, man, I hope I get to perform on this stage one day. And now I’m sitting up here being honored. I used to eat lunch right back there. This school is part of the architecture of Abbott because I had to explain to people in LA that schools could be auditoriums and lunchrooms.”

6. SOUNDBITE (English) Quinta Brunson, producer and actor:
“I grew up in Philly and we are home to the most murals in the city. I grew up really inspired by the murals I saw, especially the ones that were along the L train, which is very hyper specific to Philly. But they used to just bring me so much life and joy as I rode the train, as I was on my way to my dreams, on my way to what I was doing. And I just know how much a mural can do for a neighborhood. It makes people happy, it makes them see the beauty and where they’re from. So, I am beyond honored to be able to bring one to the city. It’s a dream come true to be part of that.”

8. SOUNDBITE (English) Quinta Brunson, producer and actor:
“And I said, "This is exactly what I want. Kids from the neighborhood, kids from the school, people from the neighborhood, people from the school. We have to see ourselves in the big picture. That’s how we know there’s a tomorrow. That’s how we know there’s a community to take care of. You don’t need to see famous people on the wall. You need to see you on the wall, painted, beautiful. We are beautiful.”

12. SOUNDBITE (English) Quinta Brunson, producer and actor:
“This school, in particular, was part of the biggest transformation in my life. I came here very timid, very young. I remember my dad dropped me off, I cried and cried and cried. A boy threw a football past me and I was just so scared and wanted to get back in the car. And then my teacher who I’ve talked a lot about who the show is named after, described by my mother, but named after Miss Abbott, my teacher here kind of got me, whipped me into shape, gave me a lot of confidence, helped me to believe in myself. So by the time I graduated eighth grade, I was a totally different child than when I came in for sixth grade here. And walking through the halls and everything now just helping me to remember how much this city and this school really built me. And that’s really special to see.”

STORYLINE:
Philadelphia’s mayor honored actor and producer Quinta Brunson with a key to the city Wednesday in a ceremony dedicating a separate mural at Brunson’s alma mater, which was the inspiration for her show “Abbott Elementary.”
The mural, titled Blooming Features, was created by artist Athena Scott with input from Brunson and Hamilton students and staff. Its brightly colored depictions of real people from the school wrap around the outside of the school’s red brick facade.
