“China always maintains that there are no winners in a trade war, and that protectionism offers no way out. Since the unilateral tariffs were introduced by the U.S., not only have they failed to resolve any of its own issues, but they have also severely undermined the international economic and trade order and business operation, and people’s daily lives and consumption.”

7. SOUNDBITE (Mandarin) He Yongqian, spokesperson of Chinese Commerce Ministry:
“China and the U.S. have maintained communication at multiple levels and through various bilateral and multilateral occasions, on the respective concern in the economic and trade fields. Recently, China has repeatedly engaged with the U.S. over its abuse of export control measures in the semiconductor sector. China, once again, urges the U.S. to immediately correct its wrongdoings and stop the discriminatory restrictions against China, and work with China to uphold the consensus reached at the Geneva high-level talks.”

10. SOUNDBITE (Mandarin) He Yongqian, spokesperson of Chinese Commerce Ministry:
“China is highly concerned about this. Trade protectionism only artificially increases the burden on consumers, creates trade barriers, disrupts the stability and smooth operation of value and supply chains, which is detrimental to both. China always advocates for the reasonable and prudent use of trade remedy measures and urges the EU side not to rashly adopt trade restriction measures.”

STORYLINE:
China urged the United States to end its “erroneous practice” of imposing unilateral tariffs, following a U.S. federal court ruling on Wednesday that blocked President Donald Trump from implementing sweeping import taxes.
“China has always maintained that there are no winners in a trade war, and that protectionism offers no way out,” said He Yongqian, spokesperson for China’s Ministry of Commerce, at a news briefing on Thursday.
The New York-based U.S. Court of International Trade issued the decision after multiple lawsuits argued that Trump’s “Liberation Day” tariffs exceeded his presidential authority and left the country’s trade policy dependent on his whim.
The tariffs imposed by both China and the U.S. on each other have been temporarily suspended following talks between trade representatives from both countries in Geneva in mid-May.
As part of the agreement, the Trump administration reduced the tariffs on Chinese imports from 145% to 30%, while China would lower its tariffs on U.S. goods from 125% to 10%.
The Trump administration has reportedly directed several companies to stop shipments of critical technologies, including those related to jet engines and semiconductors, to China.
The move is viewed as a response to China’s restrictions on the export of critical minerals to the U.S. that would further escalate the trade tensions between the world’s two largest economies.
