European countries are significantly increasing their defense spending in response to growing geopolitical tensions. Ukraine’s allies across the continent are preparing for a potential long-term conflict, with Germany’s new chancellor, Friedrich Merz, announcing plans to build what he calls the strongest military in Europe. Meanwhile, the UK government has just released its Strategic Defense Review, which emphasizes the need to be prepared for a large-scale war.
However, as these countries expand their military ambitions, one key question remains: where will they find the soldiers to fill the ranks? A global Gallup survey from last year showed that only 23% of Germans and 33% of Britons would be willing to fight for their country in the event of war—raising doubts about the public’s readiness to support these defense plans.
