8. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Abu Mohammad Mohammad, Displaced from Rafah:
"We are completely dependent on the charity kitchen currently. We cannot enter the market, not at all. The goods that were one shekel became forty or fifty shekels. Where then do people get the shekels to buy? All this suffering, while we wait (for food) at the charity kitchen. What they cook, we take. I stand in line, if you can take, you will eat. If you cannot take, you will die of hunger."

STORYLINE:
People crowded outside a soup kitchen in Khan Younis in southern Gaza on Monday, clutching worn pots and plastic buckets, waiting for cooked food.

Children shouted toward the charity workers, pleading for their containers to be filled.

“We have been relying on charity since the start of the war, we could not get anything else,” said Mohammad Abu Jalel, a man who has been displaced from Beit Lahiya in northern Gaza.

“We don’t have an income. They cook lentils and other stews. We come here in spite of ourselves. If you have the ingredients or have something at home or have an income, you wouldn’t have come here.”

U.N. agencies and major aid groups have struggled to bring in aid after Israel slightly eased its nearly three-month blockade of the territory last month.

The groups say Israeli restrictions, the breakdown of law and order and widespread looting make it extremely difficult to deliver aid to Gaza’s roughly 2 million Palestinians.

Experts have warned that the territory is at risk of famine if more aid is not brought in.

The war began when Hamas-led militants stormed into southern Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, killing some 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and abducting 251.

They are still holding 58 hostages, around a third believed to be alive, after most of the rest were released in ceasefire agreements or other deals.

Israel’s military campaign has killed over 54,000 people in Hamas-run Gaza, mostly women and children, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry, which does not say how many of the dead were civilians or combatants.

The offensive has destroyed vast areas, displaced around 90% of the population and left people almost completely reliant on international aid.
