The Democratic Republic of Congo is known for its vast mineral reserves, but it’s also a major cocoa producer, ranked 12th globally in 2023 according to UN stats. But just like Congo’s minerals, the country’s cocoa has also been a source of conflict. Armed militants, specifically from a group known as the Allied Democratic Forces or ADF, target farmers and steal their crop.
DW’s Jonas Gerding went to Beni, where a joint military operation by Congolese and Ugandan troops recently pushed ADF militants out of a cocoa-rich area.
