"Mango production is mostly affected by climate change. Various diseases in mango trees are another major issue. Mango malformation is one of the most serious diseases, causing a reduction in production. Water scarcity is also a contributing factor, as sufficient water could not be supplied to the orchards when it was needed for the mango trees. Due to the lack of adequate water, the plant, flower and fruit could not grow in a suitable environment. All these factors contribute to the low production of mangoes."

"Climate change, waterlogging, and the rapid increase in population are the main reasons for the decline in mango production. A major problem we face in mango exports is that the required size of mangoes could not be achieved, which is why we are unable to export them."

"This is one of the most famous mango varieties of Mirpur Khas, called Sindhri. It is a unique mango, not grown anywhere else in the world except Mirpur Khas. It is a blessing from God that this Sindhri mango is produced only here. We believe this variety should be highlighted and introduced to the entire world. There are 205 varieties of mangoes being showcased at the mango festival."

STORYLINE:
The production of one of Pakistan’s major fruits, mangoes, has been hit hard by climate change and a lack of sufficient water resources in the Sindh province, experts and farmers say.
Pakistan is one of the largest mango-producing countries, harvesting around 1.8 million tonnes of mangoes every year.
Muhammad Ibrahim Khaskheli, the head of the Department of Plant Pathology at Sindh Agriculture University, said that climate change, water scarcity and diseases like mango malformation are the main reasons behind the decline in mango production.
Due to these factors, "the required size of mangoes could not be achieved, which is why we are unable to export them," said farmer Gohram Baloch.
Mango production in Sindh holds a substantial share in the country’s domestic supply and exports.
Mango farmers also organize an annual festival in the Sindh city of Mirpur Khas at the beginning of harvest season, to attract local and foreign buyers and introduce their produce to the export industry.
One of the most popular varieties is the Sindhri mango — sweet, yellow and juicy.
