STORYLINE:
Veterans and soldiers gathered outside the medical centre where presidential candidate Miguel Uribe is being hospitalised on Thursday. They held a mass for the senator who was shot in the head whilst campaigning.
Meanwhile, Colombian authorities charged a second person allegedly involved in the shooting attack at Uribe’s rally, who has been in critical condition in hospital since Saturday.
His wife, Maria Claudia Tarazona received a tribute of military boots from the soldiers gathered outside the medical centre.
Carlos Eduardo Mora González is accused by the prosecutor’s office of participating in the logistics of the attack.
He was charged with aggravated homicide, illegal possession of firearms and use of minors in the commission of crimes, the report added. A judge ordered on Thursday that Mora González be remanded in custody.
The senator and pre-candidate was giving a campaign speech on Saturday in a park in western Bogotá in broad daylight when he was shot in the back and wounded in the head.
The politician underwent surgery and his condition is critical, although there are ‘signs of neurological improvement’, according to the Santa Fe Foundation Clinic where he is hospitalised.
Following the attack, a 15-year-old teenager was arrested for allegedly shooting at the politician and fleeing.
The minor rejected the charges of attempted homicide and illegal carrying of weapons brought by the prosecutor’s office and remains in detention under special conditions because he is a minor.
The authorities are investigating the motive for the attack on Uribe Turbay, an opponent of the government of leftist Gustavo Petro.
The attack on Uribe Turbay comes less than a year before the 2026 presidential elections and has raised concerns for the security of the other pre-candidates.
Some cancelled their campaign events pre-emptively, in a country with a violent past in which drug cartels assassinated presidential candidates and other high-profile figures.
The Colombian government said Thursday it is working to strengthen security arrangements for opposition members and presidential hopefuls.
