"I sort of excised her out of my life. I sort divorced myself from that image and I didn’t wanna be sex symbol. I didn’t wanna be that kind of person and didn’t understand it and I certainly didn’t want my mom to be that. I don’t think you want your mom to that. And so, you know, you wanted like a normal mom. And I didn’t understand her, and then she was taken from me. And so it was a lot of living with this sort of iconic legend that I didn’t know. And so this movie is about me going on a search to find out who she really was. And people are so complex, and we all have so many parts of ourselves. And so I wanted to get to know the different parts. And that’s what the gift has been."

"It was a neighbor, literally next door neighbor of Jayne. Tony’s house was next door to the pink house. So I mean, yes. Yes, I can relate to all of it. I also can relate to being a woman in her sixties owning her power. I am now 66 years old and I have stepped into my shoes. Like, you know what? I have no effing time to waste. She has no time to waist. We both have good family lives, beautiful children. You know what I mean? Like it’s time. As women, as filmmakers, as artists to step in, step up and do our work."

"As you kind of progress in life, for her, she realizes, I’ve got nothing to prove to anybody."grow don’t have to be anything I don’t want to be, I can just really be me. And then when you do that, then you start to open up a bit more and say, you know, I want to show this part of my life. I want share this with the world, so you stop maybe being so protective of your private life and you start welcoming people in. And I think that’s what gave it the strength and the power to do this and it’s absolutely amazing the result."

STORYLINE:
Marika Hargitay walked the red carpet at Carnegie Hall in New York City for the premiere of her documentary “My Mom Jayne: A Film by Mariska Hargitay.”
Jayne is actress Jayne Mansfield, who died in 1967, when Hargitay was three. The film, Margitay’s directorial debut, marks the first time she has delved into her mother’s story. Through interviews and an extensive collection of never-before-seen photos and home movies, the Emmy and Golden Globe winning actor explores her mother’s complicated public and private legacy.
Family members, friends and colleagues filled the red carpet in support of the “Law & Order” actor.
Jamie Lee Curtis, who Margitay referred to on the red carpet as her “other sister” told The AP that her father, Tony Curtis lived next door to Mickey Hargitay. In the documentary the actor reveals that her biological father is not Mickey Hargitay, but Italian singer Nelson Sardelli, who attended the premiere.
The HBO Original documentary premieres on Max June 27.
