STORYLINE:
Thousands of people in brightly coloured outfits danced and sang as they marched through the streets of Rome on Saturday as the city held its annual Pride parade.
The Mayor of Rome Roberto Gualtieri led the parade and prominent politicians including the leader of Italy’s main opposition party, Elly Schlein, joined the event.
Alongside the sea of colour 40 floats wound through the streets of Rome’s center and past the Colosseum.
"It is very emotional because to me Pride represents freedom," said Alessandro Tosti, who took part in the parade.
"It’s a safe place and in this moment we are all more free. And as soon as you get out of here there is always that moment when you don’t feel really free. But at Pride there is total safety.”
As well as the many brightly colour flags, many also waved Palestinian flags to express their solidarity with the people of Gaza.
"Every Pride is always important," said participant Micaela Uccelli.
"It’s always important to be together, straight, gay, bisexuals, no gender, anything. It’s important to be free, to be free to be who we are, to love who we want and live well."
